Does anyone have any recommendations for excellent quality fruit through the mail? I've been reading articles about incredible sounding fruit all over the country (luscious stone fruit and cherries would be my ideal) and would love to splurge and order some to have it shipped to me, but don't want to waste money on something mediocre.

We ordered from Pittman and Davis for many years, and they hava a major operation with excellent quality grapefruits, but it is a mistake to think that their product actually comes from Texas - at this point most of the grapefruits they ship (particularly to the eastern seaboard) come from Florida. We unsuccessfully specified Texas fruit one year.

Slate magazine had a mail-order steak tasting, and a ribeye from Alderspring won, with loads of compliments. After that article they sold out, and I had to get on a waiting list to order any (limit 2 prcustomer). They are on their way so I haven't tasted them yet. I have been very satisfied with ribeyes from Tallgrass. Very juicy, lots of flavor.
